College in the High School

College in the High School

Students take these courses on the Lind-Ritzville campus from our classroom teachers who have been approved by the university to teach the course.  First-year students, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors who take College in the High School (CHS) courses may receive college and high school credits simultaneously (Per RCW 28A.600.290).  Students must meet established criteria as explained by the classroom teacher.  Tuition is paid for by the State of Washington.  Course titles and grades are recorded on the high school transcript and on the college transcript.  Students need to be aware that not all four-year colleges and universities accept College in the High School credits.  It is recommended that students contact the college or university they are considering to determine if the credit will be accepted.

Who Pays for College in the High School Tuition?

Dual Credit College in the High School courses are paid for using funds the state gives the school district to educate each student. These funds pay for the college tuition, books, materials, and fees associated with these classes.

Why Consider Taking College in the High School Courses?

  • The state will pay your tuition.
  • You get 1 full credit for a semester College in the High Course.  This accelerates your graduation pathway, freeing up space for other courses, work, or college study lab courses during the school day.
  • College in the High School Courses count as a 5.0 course when calculating valedictorian and salutatorian GPAs
  • You can receive high school credit and college credit for the same class, with a teacher you know and can communicate with as frequently as you want.
  • You can take more challenging classes.
  • You can take college classes and regular high school classes at the same time.
  • You can get a running star on your college degree while still enjoying the high school experience with friends and local teachers.
  • This experience can make the transition from high school to college easier and clarify educational goals.
  • Students can complete more college pre-requisites in a shorter period of time. For instance, 3 years of a foreign language can be completed in 1 year.

Why Not Consider College in the High School Courses?

  • You may not be academically or emotionally ready for the college-level curriculum.
  • Grades at EWU or SCC stay on permanent college transcripts. This would hinder transferring to a 4-year college if you do poorly and/or impact Financial Aid.  However, you can drop or withdraw from a college course while enrolled in high school and still receive the HIGH SCHOOL credit without any penalty.  Talk to your high school teacher about withdrawing dates.
  • Lind-Ritzville High School transcripts will reflect course titles and grades from all College in the High School courses at EWU or SCC. Grades are calculated into your high school GPA. If you do poorly at the college it will lower your GPA on your high school transcripts.
  • College credits earned prior to high school graduation may not transfer to private or out-of-state colleges. Contact specific colleges and ask about their policies.

What does it mean when it says I can earn 1 full credit in a semester?  How is that possible?

A college course on a quarter system at a university usually lasts for 10 weeks, 5 days a week, which is about 50 days of class.  A College in the High School course at LRHS is a semester long, which is 90 days, 5 days a week.  If the College in the High School course you take is a 5 credit course at college, Lind-Ritzville High School will grant you 1 full credit for the College in the High School course on your high school transcript upon completion of the course. Your college transcript will show 5 credits earned (as long as you passed the course!).

Example: You take English 101 at Lind-Ritzville High School in the first semester of your Junior year with Mrs. Angelou.  EWU approved this course as a College in the High School Course.  You end by passing this course with A- at the end of LRHS Semester I. On your high school transcript, it will show that you took English 101, got an A- and you earned one full credit.  Students who take the regular junior English course will take the regular high school course both semesters to earn high school credit.
